An epicurean tour through
the archaic world of the Trulli Houses |
Travelling
through the rough and rural Apulia is a pleasure at any time
of the year: wide lowlands and olive groves framed by
ancient stone walls lead to medieval hamlets, hidden country
estates called Masseria, typical Trulli settlements and to
villages with whitewashed houses. A breeze of the oriental
past echoes in the alleys.
Since
ancient times, Apulia has been considered the “Gate to the
Orient”, and indeed the images of an exciting past seem to
be sliding right before us. The Valley of Itria is a gentle
landscape, a haven of peace for the eye. Glances will wander
over the wideness until getting caught once in a while in
vineyards or by streaks of sunlight that shine through
secular olive trees.
Crown
of all delights on this journey is the acquaintance with
Apulian cuisine, with the ingredients of the sun-blessed
land. The primary products – the green-golden olive oil,
cereals and their derivations like homemade pasta – are the
table’s protagonists. Next to them, ingredients such as
mushrooms, tomatoes, aubergines, legumes and other vegetable
are real masters of metamorphosis, generating all kind of
new dishes: the creative potential is amazing.
Apulia
is an excellent wine region and ranks first among today’s
national production. But its cultivation traces back to the
8th century before Christ when in Ancient Rome, the poets
Horace and Ovid praised the aroma of Apulian wine. Since
very recently, a comeback of autochthon vine can be observed
as well as the tendency to invest in quality: more than
ever, an insight into the barrels of this land will be a
literally fruitful experience.
